An Integrated Treatment Practitioner
Jeannie Dilworth is a dedicated Psychiatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner whose commitment to holistic, patient-centered care led her to make a pivotal career change. After more than a decade working in a partnership practice, Jeannie decided to establish
her own solo practice. This decision was rooted in her desire to move beyond a traditional medication-focused approach and embrace a more integrative, whole-person methodology towards healing. Her practice now incorporates nutrition, medications,
movement, and somatic practices, offering a comprehensive model of care designed to address both the physical and mental health needs of her patients.
Operating primarily through telehealth, Jeannie can provide flexible and accessible care to her patients. This modern approach aligns with her holistic philosophy while also meeting the evolving needs of today’s healthcare landscape.
The Opportunity: Building a Client-Focused Practice with Accurate Documentation
While Jeannie’s solo practice offered her the freedom to shape her care philosophy, it also presented significant administrative challenges. Manual note-taking became overwhelmingly time-consuming, forcing her to constantly divide her attention between
actively listening to patients and documenting their sessions. The necessity to block out time during her workday for documentation directly reduced the number of patients she could see, impacting both her revenue and her job satisfaction.
Compounding the challenge was the absence of support staff. Jeannie found herself in what she refers to as “drowning in intake sessions” without any assistance. The administrative burden began to infringe on her personal life, leaving her with little to no time for her passions outside of work: tulip farming, Pilates, and dog breeding. She summarized her struggle, saying, “My intakes were nonstop back-to-back, and I really started to get bogged down in my documentation.”
The Approach: Making Full Use of Valant’s Suite of Tools
Having previously used Valant for documentation and prescribing medications in her former practice, Jeannie was already comfortable with the EHR’s basic functionalities. She had never fully utilized its broader suite of tools, but as a solo practitioner, she needed to maximize efficiency and minimize administrative workload. Valant’s MYIO Patient Portal proved to be a game-changer for Jeannie’s practice. Jeannie explains that the MYIO portal enabled her to seamlessly manage patient interactions and practice operations without needing to hire additional staff.
Another critical feature that Jeannie utilizes is Valant’s AI Notes Assist, which has dramatically improved the accuracy of her coding and documentation. Jeannie shared that ever since she was audited, she has been fearful of getting a red alert from an insurance company, but now with AI Notes Assist, she feels so much more confident in her coding accuracy and capabilities. Here, she summarizes her experience: “
In the past, coding was difficult and required a significant amount of my time allotment patient time and documentation. In order to become more sophisticated with my coding, I had to capture a lot of information. The introduction of AI Notes Assist has shifted this balance, allowing me to focus on my patients without sacrificing documentation quality.”
AI Notes Assist Promotes a Stronger Connection with Patients
Despite some concerns in the wider healthcare community that AI might detract from the human connection in medicine, Jeannie’s experience has been the opposite. She shares, “I think that rather than AI replacing human connection and empathy and care, it instead really complements it.” She trusts AI Notes Assist to capture the subtle nuances of patient interactions and is confident that the clinical notes generated are clinically accurate.
Results: A Growing Practice and More Personal Time
With the administrative workload reduced, Jeannie has reclaimed her personal time. No longer forced to spend evenings and weekends reviewing notes and coding, she can now devote more energy to her hobbies and interests. “I am working smartly and am increasing my revenue and I attribute that to AI,” she says, highlighting the positive impact on both her
professional and personal life.
The operational efficiencies have also allowed her to expand her practice. “I can actually work more now because I used to dedicate Thursdays and Fridays to catch up on my documentation, but now I don’t have to do that.” This flexibility not only supports work-life balance but also enables her to serve more patients, contributing to the sustained growth of her business.
Reflecting on her journey, Jeannie credits much of her success to choosing the right electronic health record (EHR) system: “I am so happy with how my practice journey turned out. I put together my own practice very quickly and relied on everything that Valant had to offer.”
Jeannie’s experience demonstrates how integrating the right digital tools and AI support can empower practitioners to deliver exceptional care while achieving professional satisfaction and personal fulfillment.
